With over ten years experience in both appellate level
and trial level criminal defense, Tom Carberry now specializes
in civil and criminal appeals, felony trials, and legal
advice and analysis for lawyers. He has a subspecialty
as an expert witness in post-conviction litigation challenging
the competence of prior counsel. Since going into private
practice, Tom has defended numerous trial level cases,
including a first-degree murder trial, a habitual offender
trial, and various lesser offense. He has had an extensive
appellate practice defending for the most part class 3
felonies and higher.

As a public defender, Tom has tried approximately three
dozen felony trials, from first-degree murder to felony
menacing, and including death penalty litigation. As the
senior attorney in the Denver Drug Court, he supervised
young felony lawyers, litigated many dozens of motions,
and tried many cases. The litigation included challenges
to arrests and searches, as well as constitutional attacks
on numerous drug statutes. As a public defender, Tom developed
an expertise in defense of habitual criminal charges.
Tom conducted numerous training sessions for public defenders,
including training on prosecutorial misconduct, discovery
issues, juvenile law issues, and habitual offender litigation.
